You may or may not have been privvy to the news about the Federal Communications Commission passing a new set of rules about net neutrality. After all, within hours the interwebs were arguing over the color of a dress. Nevertheless, it was an important decision and one you should understand as a consumer or small business owner.

What is Net Neutrality

Net neutrality is exactly what it sounds like. An internet that is neutral to everyone who uses it. It allows for free speech and an open use of internet lines to anyone who wishes to use it. Without net neutrality, an internet service provider, cable or telephone company could block or slow down competitor's content, opinions or content that is in disagreement with the company's opinions and so on. The service provider would also be able to give faster speeds to companies who wanted to pay more for preferential treatment.

The FCC Decision

The FCC decided on a set of rules that will not allow service providers to:

  • "Block lawful content, applications, services, or non-harmful devices,"
  • "impair or degrade lawful Internet traffic on the basis of Internet content, application, or service, or use of a non-harmful device," or
  • "engage in paid prioritization."

Net neutrality is great news for the small business owner, entrepreneur or any owner of a startup company. With an open internet, new businesses are blooming every day thanks to the ease of social media and websites. The internet is a fair and level playing field for innovation, new ideas and anyone looking to launch a new business.
